The author effectively pulled off showing the reader the faults of Communist Russia. By following a little boy who, at the beginning, has complete faith and devotion to Stalin and his beliefs, readers are able to emotionally connect with and see how his life is changed forever. The only thing that was troublesome was that the boy had everlasting hope that everything would work out in the end when, in reality, his situation and circumstance would have actually been much graver. The story did however show why Communism didn’t work well and how the politicians and everyday people following Communism manipulated it and caused others pain in order to further their own means.
