Michiko is 9 years old and living in Vancouver with her parents and baby brother. Just before her birthday, her father leaves on what she thinks is another business trip. But two weeks later, the rest of the family (including her grandfather, aunt and uncle) are loaded on to a train and taken to the interior of B.C. It’s not until Michiko goes to school in the new place that she realizes why she and her family have been separated. Japanese people are considered the enemy and must be taken away from their homes.
