This was an enjoyable historicalish fiction read but I didn’t think it was as good as Before We Were Yours. The tale follows 2 plot lines from the late 1800s and the late 1900s that centered around family/community ties to slavery. It twisted from the Louisiana swamps to the Texas hill country which I enjoyed since I’m originally from that area. I felt it ended a little abruptly but still enjoyed the story and message it offered.
