With Jessica Lange experience a career renaissance thanks to her role in American Horror Story, I was pleasantly pleased to see the library finlly get a copy of this little gem of a movie. Based on the Balzac novel of the same name, this movie changes quite a few things in the story, but that is all right since the intent is the same. Bette is bitter and jealous of her more superior relatives and how they basically treat her as a servant. After her hopes of marrying the Baron are dashed, she befriends a young artist, whom Hulot's daughter purposefully steals from Bette, well, Bette can take no more, and with the help of an actress, sets about to bring the Hulot families downfall. Lange is excellent as Bette. A real standout. She is an actress who can use her eyes, or give a look, to get her point across the audience. Loved the movie, but the real reason to see it Lange's performance.
