This is a wonderful family saga about one of the first (fictional) families to settle in Ontario. It follows the Whiteoaks, and their extended family and neighbours from the mid 1800s to the 1950s. This volume sits in the middle of the story and was the second Jalna book written, although the events in it take place midway through the series. It's the story of Philip and Adeline Whiteoak and their children and grandchildren. Philip was an officer in the British army and she was the daughter of an Irish land owner. The characters are richly drawn and very memorable.

The books don't need to be read in sequential order, but it helps.
