One of the best movies I have seen!! Harrowing tale of man´s capacity for cruelty! And women's courage and ferocious will to survive! It makes you cringe in horror and it will leave a haunting memory long after the end. Just what film does at its best!!

Very shocking but true to life how deranged so many people are using children to satisfy their sexual ugliness. Jeffrey Epstein would have been perfect as the bar owner.

A well-crafted study of the limits of endurance of pain and suffering and the warped mind of a monstrous sadist.
Don't let the gloomy first part of the film deter you.
There's a sort of grotesque beauty to the hellish horrors that later beset our heroine.

A movie with good acting, sound, production set, cinematography, editing and interesting structure. Unfortunately, the subject was one brutal misogynistic and much worse preacher who is up there as the most hated characters in film, such as: Amon Goeth in Schindler’s List, John Doe in Seven, Edwin Epps in 12 Years a Slave or Joffrey Baratheon in Game of Thrones. And how about those monsters still breathing among us like Jerry Sandusky, Larry Nassar and numerous catholic priests … A disturbing film to watch or tear away.

As someone who has actually been sexually preyed upon by their own father for 18 long years, I think I have some-what more of a say in what empowers survivors of sexual abuse than some of the other people who have commented on this movie (ultracrepidarians like HAMBH and LauraSteinert, for example). THIS MOVIE EMPOWERED ME. As uncomfortable as this movie can be at times, I found it well worth sticking it out. Seeing Liz/Joanne go through some of the worst experiences a woman (or anyone) can go through and never bow down, never stop fighting when again and again she faced the seemingly unbearable helped me to keep stoking the fire in my own belly. Even in situations that were beyond chaotic, she kept control within herself. This movie also allowed me to see what happens when that fire in your belly goes out, as was seen with Liz/Joanne's mother, which oddly enough, is basically my own mother. So in all due respect, unless you yourself have been a victim of sexual abuse (especially at a young age), maybe refrain from having an opinion on a matter that you have no expertise on because it does not feel great to hear that stuff from people like that. It just reinforces the idea that survivors of sexual abuse will never be truly understood, and therefore forever alone.

Only someone who condones abusing women could like this. The actresses in Hollywood should expand their protest of the casting couch to not making this trash. Hug your wife and daughter, more satisfying than watching this!

A very dark movie. Guy Pearce plays a very twisted character. Set in a western setting but not a real western movie.
I thought the acting was good.
If you're a special snowflake, avoid this movie, you may get so triggered you'll go into a seizure.

If you are a sick twisted misogynist, there is a chance that you might think this is empowering for women. (One character points out to the 13 year old being raped by her father that the only people telling you to turn the other cheek are the ones in power.) But this is not empowering for women. It is not uplifting. On the other hand, if you really enjoy watching women being whipped, beaten, raped, molested by their fathers, tortured, humiliated in public and willing to self mutilate to escape their circumstances, you'll probably like this. I obviously hated it.

I gave up after 35 mins. hence no stars. Very scenic though, but then it was filmed in Germany.

The "Reverend": People think it's the flames that make Hell unbearable. It's not. It is the absence of Love.
