Zachariah Thomson has spent the past year getting used to the idea that his best friend, Charlie, and the lovely Luna are now vampires--just like him. As they all learn to cope with the changes this strange new state of affairs brings, a mysterious creature appears. Likened to the Beast of the Apocalypse, it begins to dismantle the network of support around zack, who discovers he is the subject of an ancient prophecy that relates to the End of Days. As friends and enemies, old and new, throw his world into chaos, zack is forced to re-examine what it means to be good at a time when it seems that only the strong and the ruthless can survive.

“”Sneaky,” Mr. Entwistle said. “I usually charge an arm and a leg to make a television appearance.” He raised his hat to the cameras, then he turned to me. “Do I need to say it?” he asked.
“Say what?”
I bolted past the broken gate and down the hall. What else could I do? My life had become too absurd to make any rational decisions. We rounded the corner. About a dozen officers were waiting at the bottom of the stairs. They were moving forward cautiously, guns drawn out, all decked out in gas masks and bulletproof vests. “ p.78

In the second of the Night Runner Series, teenage vampire Zack is living with best vamp friend Charlie and guardian Ophelia in secrecy. Zack is being chased by older vampires, his uncle Max has disappeared, and a new beast from Hell is killing vampires in a gruesome manner.

The book is set in Peterborough, Ontario, and adds a certain Canadian feel to this addition to the teen vampire genre. It is well written, the characters are well developed, and it is even better than the first book in the series. Highly recommended.
