Before trying the practice of oil pulling, I read two different books on the subject. This is one of them.
SUMMARY: "All disease starts in the mouth! As incredible as it may seem, most of the chronic and infectious illnesses that trouble our society today are influenced by the health of our mouths. Our mouths are a reflection of the health inside our bodies. If you have poor dental health, you are bound to have other health problems. Despite regular brushing and flossing, over 90 percent of the population has some degree of gum disease or tooth decay. Most people aren’t even aware they have existing dental problems. Recent research has demonstrated a direct link between oral health and chronic illness. Simply improving the health of your teeth and gums can cure many chronic problems."

REVIEW: The above statement is the basis that Dr. Fife works from. The author states that oil pulling does not pull toxins from the body to the mouth as many claim, but rather pulls bacteria and toxins from the mouth, freeing up the immune system to do important work elsewhere. Science has proven that oral health can have a direct link to health in the rest of the body. More than half of this book is taken up with scientific research and case studies backing this natural health therapy.
THE NOT AS GOOD: Although Dr. Fife cites a lot of scientific study to back up his claim as to why oil pulling works, he also throws in quite a bit of his own intuition. This feels inappropriate for a book written by a physician. Also, Dr. Fife believes any oil will do no matter the quality. I cannot agree with this. Quality should always matter. There is a huge difference between putting cold-pressed virgin olive oil in your mouth and cheapo corn oil.

CONCLUSION: Dr. Fife has his own method of how to complete oil pulling that differs a bit from others. This is why I read more than one book on the subject to get different views and to decide for myself what would work the best for me. This book is good if you are looking for the reasons why oil pulling works rather than just how to do it. Does oil pulling work? I have been doing it for two weeks with a good quality oil and have already seen some major results in muscle and digestive relaxation as well as more energy during the day. I am beginning to feel much less sensitivity in my gums and teeth. But I think two weeks is too little of time to make a firm decision so I will keep at it a while longer. If nothing else, my jaw muscles are becoming much stronger from the daily swishing!
