The acting and production quality are good - but I could not find any redeeming quality in this story or its characters. Granted, I only watched the pilot, but I could not watch another episode it was that grating. I could not find one person in the entire episode who I had any interest in watching or seeing again. It is not that I don't enjoy bleak story-telling, I have thoroughly enjoyed The Book of Eli and Mad Max type movies. It is also not that I don't enjoy complex and flawed characters, some of the best shows and films center around flawed and complex characters. I just could not spend any more time with any of these characters - they were unenjoyable to spend spend time with.

I agree, an absolutely fantastic series, must watch both Series 1 and 2. I agree, the police sergeant's struggle with the scumbag criminal in the cellar is gripping. I was on my feet shouting at the TV. A struggle to the death, one woman against the scumbag who was responsible for the death of her daughter. The emotion is all there. And again, her repeat performance against same scumbag on the boat. The character Ms Lancashire portrays is exactly how I would aspire to be - strong, doing the right thing in her life and at work, doing the best she can in her job. Series 2 also excellently done. Just skip over the sheep part at the beginning of Series 2, which I found upsetting, if you are an animal lover.

Absolutely Fantastic !!
Best thing I've seen in Years !!

Had to have a go, & watch the whole series at once; by the end I had my own British accent;
Good thing though,
as the pillocks leaving negative comments here, now won't understand me.

Catherine Cawood is a tough police sgt. who thinks she has seen the worst of human behavior. But then the man who she thinks is responsible for her daughter's death is released from prison....

Cracking series. Ignore the moans and groans from below regards character development and lack of racial mix. Happy Valley rates as one of the best crime series from Britain. Ms. Lancashire has come a long way since her Coronation Street days. The cellar death struggle is equal to anything the Hollywood machinery can produce. Brilliant!!

I found this so disappointing -- and I was a long-time fan of Sarah Lancashire. The lead is an angry, bitter woman whose emotional range is about one-inch wide. There's very little character development (though we do see some in her sister and grandson, surprisingly).

Challenging, too, is the limited roles for actors of East Asian/Indian heritage -- everybody else is white, which is particularly odd as the north of England is much more racially and ethnically diverse than you'd ever know from watching this. No Black Brits, whatsoever. I suppose that shouldn't be surprising, given that Sally Wainwright seems able to only write flat and insignificant roles for people of color; that's true here as it is in "Last Tango in Halifax." At least that series had more character development.
