Nice little mystery with poverty, touches of larger social issues from religious persecution to government corruption, and magic. The spell baking parts were my favorite!

The sequel is very good and includes social structure that grasped my attention right away. It is fast paced and keeps me wanting to read more, especially the mystery involvment.

This book feels like it was written specifically for me: middle grade fantasy/mystery mash-up in a world that feels sort of late-Victorian/early 20th c.? Yes please. And, predictably, I really really enjoyed this. I thought the concept here (a world where nobles use proper sorcery and everyone else uses "common magic") was really interesting, I felt invested in the characters, and Anderson included lots of issues of religion and social class that you might not expect in such an overall light read, and yet they're handled in a way that feels totally age-appropriate. And there's a sequel! Cheers all around.
