It all begins on a Monday, when four people board an elevator in a Manhattan office tower. Each presses a button for their floor, but the elevator proceeds, nonstop, to the top. Once there it pauses for a few seconds, but the doors don't open. Instead, the elevator begins to descend floor-by-floor. Then it plummets. Right to the bottom of the shaft. It appears to be a random accident... But on Tuesday, it happens again, in a different Manhattan skyscraper. And then Wednesday brings yet another tragic high-rise catastrophe. In only three days, one of the most vertical cities in the world--and the nation's capital of media, finance and entertainment--is plunged into chaos. Clearly, this is anything but random. This is a cold, calculated bid to terrorize the city. And it's succeeding. Fearing for their lives, thousands of men and women working in offices across the city refuse to leave their homes. Commerce has slowed to a trickle. Emergency calls to the top floors of apartment towers go unanswered. Who is behind this? Why are they doing it? Are these deadly acts of sabotage somehow connected to a fingerless body found on the High Line? Two seasoned New York detectives and a straight-shooting journalist race against time to uncover the truth before the city's newest, and tallest, residential tower has its ribbon-cutting on Friday night.

Thank you, but I’ll take the stairs. Fast read, a bit of a not-quite-red herring, and plenty of hints throughout. I enjoyed it.

I’ve read a number of Linwood Barclay’s novels and this one was good but not one of his best. Not sure I’ll get on an elevator anytime soon. The story started out a little on the slow side but then the pace picked up with a real twist ending.

my first book by this author. to me it had a vibe that reminded me of airport by arthur hailey, which i really enjoyed back in the day. NOT recommended for people with elevator phobia, luckily mine is escalators.

This was a decent thriller over all, but I didn't think it was one of Linwood Barclay's best books. I have read them all, and this was seemed a bit slower paced and had fewer twists and turns. The sabotaged elevator scenario was new and it was interesting to imagine the effect that would have on a city like New York. It was an entertaining read over all, but not as gripping as most of his others. I also found the eventual reveal of the main villain's justification for the deaths of some innocent bystanders to be quite flimsy. I thought this one was good, but not great.

It is such a nice surprise to find a book by a favourite author on the trade paperback shelf just inside the door at the library, while all catalogued copies are out and the hold list is long. This was a satisfying read of a couple of days. It is fun to get absorbed into a suspense novel, and interesting to speculate how a city like New York would fare if the elevators were out of service.

Surprisingly pretty good except for the long, drawn out, unnecessary dialog. Found myself skipping over pages.
