BIRD ON A WIRE hails from that late-eighties/early-nineties era of films that I love so dearly. Not only did they boast stellar soundtracks but every film felt like a classic: action flicks, comedies, dramas, the whole kit and caboodle. The premise is simple: Richard Jarmin, a man in witness protection, has his alias and location information compromised and, when it falls into the hands of the murderer he testified against, his life is at stake. Coincidentally, he runs into a woman from his past the same day who demands answers after she believed him dead. Mel Gibson and Goldie Hawn exude easy chemistry as our dynamic duo, fleeing a posse of killers. With the federal government incapable of helping them, these two are well and truly on their own. Their personalities have grown further into contrast as he has remained the idealistic bleeding-heart hippie from the sixties and she grew into a wealthy and luxurious life as a lawyer. Flustered and paranoid and thrown together again after a long sojourn apart, it's their love-hate relationship that keeps you invested as their level of security goes up and down like a yo-yo. You feel the thrills as they crawl across the ledges of buildings, dodge bullets from an overhead semiautomatic, careen in a rental car through Vancouver streets (anyone else notice the Scotiabank outside the shopping center?), or scuttle around the tropical exhibit at the zoo (fun fact: this was one of the largest sets ever built on Canadian soil). You laugh as they take a trip through Rick's diverse former lives as both a fey hairdresser and the director of an animal sanctuary or as they dupe some officers rushing to the bank they just sent flying into a panic over a reported credit card. It's got Goldie and Mel in their heyday delivering that perfect tone that balances comedy and action. It's a breathlessly fun ride that I definitely recommend.
