Really cool plot but really vulgar. I had to take a break and return it for a while before continuing it

If youโ€™re not squeamish you will like this story. The local baseball coach, a teacher, husband and devoted father has been accused of a horrific crime. A young boy violated and then brutally murdered. He has an iron clad alibi or does he? Can someone be in two places at the same time or does he have a twin no one is aware of. If you were a fan of Mr. Mercedes you no doubt enjoyed the character of Holly Gibney she is back in this novel, her willingness to believe in things no one else does leads the investigation team to a series of unsolved murders. Follow them down a dark twisted path as they work together to solve this paranormal mystery.

I'm not an avid Stephen King reader due to the violence and horror; books like the Green Mile are more to my liking. That said, this story was interesting due to the 'outsider' element along with the suspense. Of all characters, Holly was my favorite :) I enjoyed it but can't say its the best story I've ever read. As the saying goes, 'each to their own'

One of my favorite books by Stephen King! I'd recommend to anyone who likes mysteries or crime fiction, but with a hint of supernatural to keep things interesting. Know that it does have some violent and disturbing scenes (it is King, after all), but the 'whodunit' is so compelling that you'll keep reading. Loved it.

Classic creepy Stephen King. I really enjoyed this. I'm thinking it might have scared me more if I hare read a printed version at night. I listened to it at work and it was still creepy. Stephen King never disappoints. This could make an interesting movie.

This is the first King book that I have enjoyed in almost 20 years...I was halfway through it thinking that it was a typical crime mystery and then BANG...it started getting scary. It reminded me of the GOOD Stephen King stories that I read growing up.

A gripping plot with unpredictable twists and turns, although the ending is reminiscent of many other King stories. Graphic crime scenes are disturbing but sensitively handled. As always, King writes about characters perceptively and empathically, enabling readers to immerse themselves in the story.

I haven't read a Stephen King book in a while and this reminded me why I've liked so many of his books. I liked the characters and the storyline. It was a book I had a hard time putting down as I wanted to find out how it was all going to come together and how it would end.

Goodreads "best book 2018"

When a small town hero is accused of an unspeakable crime, and all signs point to his guilt, detective Ralph Anderson and his cohorts in law enforcement think they have a slam dunk case. But Terry Maitland steadfastly proclaims his innocence, and new information emerges that casts the investigation into creepy, inexplicable doubt.

Called a "throwback thriller", this is certainly a return to King's roots of eerie supernatural horror, complemented by fleshed out characters you get to know very well. Eventually you have a group of adults trying to wrap their minds around the impossible, the supernatural, the concept of "no end to the universe", and their journey to do that together reminded me a little of IT.

This is classic King and I love, love, LOVE it!

I thought this was a pretty good Stephen King as it tips its hat to the police procedural trilogy from a few years ago (which I didn't hate but found flat at times) and has the weird circumstantial evidence that Terry Maitland was both there and not there at a kid's murder. Add in small town mob justice, a sprinkle of weird stuff, and some out of the box thinking, and you have a solid read.

An excellent read if you're a fan of Stephen King. It moves slowly in parts and in other parts it's a page-turner. I haven't read any King for a few years and was pleasantly surprised at how he has kept up with the times and keeps the story unfolding so well.

This was an interesting title, though I am familiar with King's works . . I felt that this was not his best.

Still, this was a pretty good read: an arrest made on a pillar of the community, a detective bent on getting answers and looking in all the "right" places except one. He solicits the help of both the folks defending the original man on trial, and other friends he meets while bringing the "outsider" to "justice. The ending is. . . . .

Appearances can be deceiving.

Good work of fiction.

I'm not much of a fan of horror, but my Dad and I were road-tripping together and needed an audiobook that would agree with us both, and somehow we picked The Outsider. I probably wouldn't recommend the audio version, but the book was super entertaining--at turns funny and scary, and King sprinkled a bit of socio-political commentary here and there (not too much!). I'd describe this book as being kind of X-Files like, with all sorts of characters trying to get to the bottom of a mystery. And though it's dark, I found it to be uplifting, also. So, I'd totally recommend this to the right reader, and if you haven't read any Stephen King for a while, it shows how his writing keeps up with the times.

Excellent read - suspenseful, mysterious, and couldn't wait to finish it. How can a person be in two places at once? Supernatural circumstances come into play!

I found this story riveting. Stephen King has a way with words even if you don't like the gist of the story. He is simply a great writer. I however, could not put this book down, but I will say I preferred to read it during the daytime as it was very scary. I loved the ending as it gave hope for a better tomorrow!

Solid King. Suspenseful, but not overtly scary.

If you are a Stephen King fan, you will probably enjoy this (as long as really graphic details about a crime don't bother you). If you are not a fan, this will almost certainly not make you one.

Steven King is truly on top of his form here: a carefully restrained but gripping tale of fear and possession, mystery and serial killings, with overt homage somehow to both Agatha Christie and Harlan Coben, Poe and Bram Stoker. King's narrative remains tight and compelling to the end of the book, which isn't always a strength in the longer novels.

NorthPlains_BriannaS Oct 06, 2018

Crime and surreal horror mashup like only King can do!

My first try at Stephen King - and last. Though King is a good writer his plot victim was a disgusting scenario. Felt ashamed reading it. Where can I enter my two stars?

Typical King novel with lots of action, interesting characters and a formula ending that never quite delivers the villains true nature. Good read though. I would recommend it if you like King ๐Ÿ‘‘. ๐Ÿ˜Š

I agree with the last comment. I wish he could've had an ending that was more real life. You can solve anything by blaming legends or little green men. Don't run into that much in real life.

This book was well-written and an easy and enjoyable read, howver, I feel like there was so much missed opportunity with this storyline that could have fine in a different direction with more suspense. It became less believable toward the end.
